Awards

The park is managed in a sustainable way that is sympathetic to the needs of bees and other invertebrates.  Over the last 10 years the apiary has attained many grants and awards.

Hinchingbrooke Country Park manages 5 areas of wildflower meadows that are not cut until late August providing improved forage for bees.  Together, with the park, we help to consistently achieve Green Flag Awards and last year we also achieved success with a Bees Needs Award from the department for the Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

During 2019-2020 the Association was successful in raising £1,500 to refurbish their viewing gallery. Monies were raised from Huntingdon Town Council, The Freemans’ Trust and Friends of the Park. This has provided enhanced opportunities to encourage further engagement and learning about honeybees. In 2020 a further £2,499 grant was secured by Huntingdonshire Beekeepers Association from Cambridgeshire Community Fund to refurbish a storage and training unit located within the apiary.  This helps to ensure a professional delivery of beekeeping information to the public and a safe place to store valuable equipment and training aids. In summary, the apiary provides a unique educational facility which effectively educates casual visitors and formal school visits alike about bees and helps spread the word about their conservation and crucially how they can help bees.
